St.udying children wit.h Down syndrome (DS), Lenneberg (1967) would argue, should be a wonderful way t.o st.udy language development.. Rat.her t.han t.racking t.he rapid progress of non-handicapped children t.hrough development.al st.ages, one could choose a level of int.erest. and examine it. at. a leisurely pace, for exactly t.he same effect. Despit.e subst.ant.ial delays in t.he onset. and t.iming of language development., t.he language st.ructures t.hat. are acquired by children with DS have st.andardly been described as normal, unremarkable in t.he sequence of t.heir development., and wit.h no evidence of deviant. forms not. observed at. some point in normal development (Bloom & Lahey, 1978; Evans & Hampson, 1968; Rondal, 197.5; Rosenberg, 1982; Ryan, 1975).
